In May, Storytellers will launch its 15th-anniversary season by showcasing Kings of Leon. Subsequent episodes will feature recent Grammy winners Ray LaMontagne and Cee Lo Green, the bands My Morning Jacket and Death Cab for Cutie, and nouveau soul man Maxwell.
“We’ve always really liked (the show) because it’s great to hear how your favorite songs were written and what they’re about,” says Kings of Leon drummer Nathan Followill.
That basic approach actually has subversive roots, says Bill Flanagan, Storytellers’ creator and executive producer. “When we began, the idea was to be the opposite of what was then the dominant TV culture, which was all about quick cuts. We wanted to give artists an hour to talk about where the music comes from.”
For the upcoming season, “we wanted artists who don’t have a platform on television all the time, whose fan base comes from touring and downloads,” says VH1 president Tom Calderone. “We’d always had tremendous stories, but we wanted to hear some stories that hadn’t been told. We needed a fresh perspective.”
For many music fans and insiders, though, Storytellers has also been something of an oasis, “a rare opportunity to watch musicians discuss their work at any length and with any substance,” says Alan Light, programming director for public television’s Live From the Artists Den. “And artists who don’t do a lot of media — Bowie, Billy Joel, Tom Waits — have responded to that, wanted to be part of it.”
Taped at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC, Dec. 12, the evening will feature the talents of Mariah Carey, Miranda Cosgrove, Annie Lennox, Maxwell and Matthew Morrison. Ellen DeGeneres will host.
“‘Christmas in Washington’ is a holiday treasure that brings together some of today’s best musical artists for a wonderful celebration of the season,” said Michael Wright, executive vice president/head of programming for TNT, TBS and TCM, in a statement. “We’re especially excited to welcome host Ellen DeGeneres to the festivities. It’s certain to be a night to remember.”
Annually attended by the President and First Lady and other Washington VIPs, “Christmas in Washington” is a holiday musical celebration benefiting the Children’s National Medical Center.
“Christmas in Washington” is executive-produced by 13-time Emmy winner George Stevens, Jr. and directed and produced by three-time Emmy winner Michael Stevens for The Stevens Company.
The TNT presentation will be followed at 9 PM ET by a special holiday screening of “The Wizard Of Oz.”

Along with fellow founders D’Angelo and Erykah Badu, Maxwell was enormously important in defining and shaping the neo-soul movement that rose to prominence over the latter half of the ’90s. Drawing his greatest inspiration from the concept of the R&B auteur (looking to artists like Prince, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, etc.), Maxwell recorded some of the most ambitious R&B of his time, becoming wildly popular and often earning critical raves in the process. What was more, his recurring theme of romantic monogamy set him apart from the vast majority of his bump’n'grind lover-man contemporaries. release.
