Maxwell talks at Press Conference in New York City, May 28th

April 28, 2009 was a great day for Maxwell fans. With rumored release dates posted on the internet year after year since his self imposed hiatus, Maxwell finally gave the fans what they had been anxiously anticipating - an official release date for the first CD of his long awaited trilogy BLACKsummers’night.

Although, the release date of July 7, 2009 had been announced as official, some still did not want to get their hopes dashed, yet again. The press conference made it truly official. As they waited for the man of the hour (excuse me, YEAR!), invited guests were treated to several tracks from the CD. When Maxwell appeared, he answered five questions from the press and mingled with the guests afterwards. Several of those in attendance at the press conference/release party gave the CD high marks and informed us that we will not be disappointed. (We had no worries)

In addition to the press conference, Maxwell’s official site http://www.musze.com was re-launched with the video premiere of the first single, Pretty Wings And within hours, the first dates were announced for the 2009 tour:

Milwaukee (Sat-June 20) / Seattle (Tue-June 23) / Vancouver (Wed-June 24)
Las Vegas (Fri-June 26) / Los Angeles-BET Awards (Sun-June 28)
Phoenix (Mon-June 29) / Austin (Wed-July 1) / San Antonio (Thu-July 2)
New Orleans (Sat-July 4) / Nashville (Sun-July 12) / Louisville (Mon-July 13)
Columbus (Wed-July 15) / Cleveland (Thu-July 16) / Pittsburgh (Sat-July 18)
Buffalo (Sun-July 19) / Albany (Tue-July 21) / Atlantic City (Fri-July 24)
Foxwoods (Sat-July 25) / Norfolk (Mon-July 27) / Savannah (Tue-July 28)
Tampa (Thu-July 30) / Miami (Sat-August 1) / Orlando (Sun-August 2)

Maxwell wasn’t joking when he told us some months back that he was going to be “in our face so much…”. He continued by saying that we were going to get tired of seeing him. So, not true, Max. Keep it coming!

A Quick Chit-Chat with Maxwell

By Zandile Blay

11-26-08maxwell.jpgLast Sunday was a good night to be Maxwell. After a sold out concert at the United Palace Theater, he headed downtown to the Bowery Hotel where a room-full of lucky fans and celebrity friends like model Liya Kebede and the gal-about-town Bevy Smith waited to welcome him. Between hugs, kisses, and more hugs, he took five minutes to chat with me about his return to music, his insecurities and his roots as a Brooklyn boy.

So how are you feeling right now?
I feel such a sense of validation because I never thought that people could be so patient and so loving and so respectful of the fact that when people make music they need to live a life to bring that music to them. It’s like, in this day in age they want to love you and destroy you. But that’s not happened. People genuinely love me and have been genuinely pulling for me to just get to it when I was ready. I want to thank anyone out there who did that for me.

So it’s safe to say that you were you blown away by the response you’ve gotten?
You’ve got to remember, I’m from Brooklyn. I grew up on welfare. My mother was a nurse. It’s like grass roots, immigrant type shit — excuse my French. But to be in a situation where you get to do what you love, take a break, come back, and still have people there, it’s given me so much confidence. I’m a very insecure person. I know I may come off a little bit like I know my shit don’t stink, but at the end of the day, I just want people to like me and I hope they like what I do. This made my world. This whole tour. especially New York tonight has been a monumental moment for me.

So speaking of the new album, when are we going to see it?
The new album is going to be out first quarter next year. We’re starting a secondary market tour and then we are doing an arena tour so I will be on the road for about two years. Going to Africa again, going to Asia, going to everywhere I haven’t been.
