Also on Friday, Maxwell was in attendance at the 41st NAACP Image Awards. Anthony Anderson and Toni Braxton were the presenters for the ‘Outstanding Male Artist’ category.

Anthony’s reaction when he opened the envelope and said Maxwell’s name was priceless and did not hide the fact of who he was pulling for.

As Maxwell made his way to the stage to graciously accept his award, he received a standing ovation from the crowd and as he delivered his acceptance speech, the camera caught cutaway shots of several females in the audience who could not hide what many viewers at home were probably doing, as well.

MAXWELL MAKES BILLBOARD HISTORY!

(2009-10-08) | Maxwell Makes Billboard History!

New York (Top40 Charts/ Shore Fire Media) - New Ambassador of Soul Maxwell has entered the history books at Billboard with “Pretty Wings” and “Bad Habits,” the two singles from the approaching-platinum album ‘BLACKsummers’night.’ Billboard’s Gary Trust writes “For the first time in the 16-year history of the Adult R&B radio airplay chart, one act monopolizes the top two slots on the survey.”

Maxwell has also earned some of the best reviews of his career, and is playing to bigger crowds than ever before on his current arena tour, selling out Madison Square Garden in NYC (his largest ever hometown show), the Verizon Center in Washington DC, the Spectrum in Philly, and more. Plans are in the works for additional touring in 2010.

The Billboard achievement continues the remarkable momentum behind BLACKsummers’night’ (Columbia), “one of the best records of 2009″ (NY Post).

Other recent highlights include:

*Additional sold-out arena shows in Detroit, Richmond, and Atlanta, on his 18-date North American fall tour.

*Early “Album of the Year” buzz in the LA Times’ Grammy forecast: “A seductive, yet devastatingly heartbreaking record. Look for it on year-end lists, and look for it in this field.”

*A glowing profile in the Washington Post Oct. 2: “Call it a comeback that no one saw coming - including Maxwell. His latest album, ‘BLACKsummers’night,’ debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart in July, officially ending a multiyear hiatus from the stage, the radio and the ever-bourgeoning blogosphere. Now the prodigiously gifted, intensely private 36-year-old is enjoying the biggest tour of his career.”

*Outstanding live reviews from the opening dates of the tour:
“Jazzy, wild soulfulness… a stellar concert.”- NY Post.
“Maxwell wowed the crowd at Madison Square Garden.”- MTV.
“Maxwell transformed the Coliseum into a mass of screaming, undulating female fans.”- Richmond Times-Dispatch.
“For the sold-out crowd, the temperature couldn’t get hot enough as [Maxwell] showed fans just what they’d been missing during his almost eight-year hiatus,”- Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“He gave his hit single “Pretty Wings” star treatment, letting each word, each wrong and each heartache linger. When he finished… fans yelled for more.”- Charlotte Observer.

Maxwell began redefining classic soul music for a new generation with the release of his critically-acclaimed debut album, Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite, in April 1996.  Fueled in part by the RIAA gold single, “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder),” the Grammy-nominated Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite was certified platinum in March 1997, less than a year after its release, and achieved double platinum status, in recognition of sales of more than 2 million copies in the US alone, in 2002.  Maxwell followed up with his MTV Unplugged EP, released in July 1997 and certified gold in September 1999. His second full-length album, Embrya, was released in June 1998 and certified platinum in May 1999.  Another Maxwell single, the hit “Fortunate,” was certified gold in June 1999.  To date, Maxwell has achieved 10 gold and platinum certifications from the RIAA for his albums and singles. Another Maxwell single, the hit “Fortunate,” was certified gold in June 1999. Maxwell’s third album, Now (2001) debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart; selling 300,000 copies its maiden week and eventually also reaching double platinum status.  To date, Maxwell has achieved 10 gold and platinum certifications from the RIAA for his albums and singles.

MAXWELL PRESS CONFERENCE, ‘PRETTY WINGS’ AND TOUR DATES!

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Maxwell talks at Press Conference in New York City, May 28th

Maxwell talks at Press Conference in New York City, May 28th

April 28, 2009 was a great day for Maxwell fans. With rumored release dates posted on the internet year after year since his self imposed hiatus, Maxwell finally gave the fans what they had been anxiously anticipating - an official release date for the first CD of his long awaited trilogy BLACKsummers’night.

Although, the release date of July 7, 2009 had been announced as official, some still did not want to get their hopes dashed, yet again. The press conference made it truly official. As they waited for the man of the hour (excuse me, YEAR!), invited guests were treated to several tracks from the CD. When Maxwell appeared, he answered five questions from the press and mingled with the guests afterwards. Several of those in attendance at the press conference/release party gave the CD high marks and informed us that we will not be disappointed. (We had no worries)

In addition to the press conference, Maxwell’s official site http://www.musze.com was re-launched with the video premiere of the first single, Pretty Wings And within hours, the first dates were announced for the 2009 tour:

Milwaukee (Sat-June 20) / Seattle (Tue-June 23) / Vancouver (Wed-June 24)
Las Vegas (Fri-June 26) / Los Angeles-BET Awards (Sun-June 28)
Phoenix (Mon-June 29) / Austin (Wed-July 1) / San Antonio (Thu-July 2)
New Orleans (Sat-July 4) / Nashville (Sun-July 12) / Louisville (Mon-July 13)
Columbus (Wed-July 15) / Cleveland (Thu-July 16) / Pittsburgh (Sat-July 18)
Buffalo (Sun-July 19) / Albany (Tue-July 21) / Atlantic City (Fri-July 24)
Foxwoods (Sat-July 25) / Norfolk (Mon-July 27) / Savannah (Tue-July 28)
Tampa (Thu-July 30) / Miami (Sat-August 1) / Orlando (Sun-August 2)

Maxwell wasn’t joking when he told us some months back that he was going to be “in our face so much…”. He continued by saying that we were going to get tired of seeing him. So, not true, Max. Keep it coming!

MAXWELL TO PERFORM AT THE 2009 ESSENCE FESTIVAL

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

During the weekend of July 3-5, 2009, Maxwell will be one of the performers during the 2009 Essence Music Festival.naturally, this is a welcome surprise to his many fans to still await the release of ‘Black Summers’ Night’, his highly anticipated trilogy. Max promises to whet the appetite of all in attendance. Read below…

Maxwell has always done things his own way, so when it came time to introduce people to the music from his forthcoming album trilogy ‘Black Summers’ Night,’ he knew exactly how he’d do it: he’d perform it for them live. Says Maxwell, “I’ve been working on and off on the ‘Black Summers’ Night’ trilogy and thought the best way to debut it was to take it direct to the people. Nothing beats a live show. You can’t mp3 it. You can record it on a camera phone, but it’ll never duplicate the raw experience of being there. In this day and age, we need that, and I need that.”

But he adds that the show won’t consist of entirely new material: “A few new songs from ‘Black Summer’s Night’ will be included in the concerts, but rest assured that as much as I want to, I won’t bombard people with material they don’t know.” There will, however, be a few unexpected numbers, including a cover of Al Green’s “Simply Beautiful” (which earned Maxwell raves when he performed it at the BET Awards earlier this year) and “an extra one that represents my love for Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z. It’s not what you think though- I’m not a rapper, and I won’t rap, but when you hear it,” explains Maxwell, “it’ll make sense!”

MAXWELL COMING TO A CITY NEAR YOU!

A Quick Chit-Chat with Maxwell

By Zandile Blay

11-26-08maxwell.jpgLast Sunday was a good night to be Maxwell. After a sold out concert at the United Palace Theater, he headed downtown to the Bowery Hotel where a room-full of lucky fans and celebrity friends like model Liya Kebede and the gal-about-town Bevy Smith waited to welcome him. Between hugs, kisses, and more hugs, he took five minutes to chat with me about his return to music, his insecurities and his roots as a Brooklyn boy.

So how are you feeling right now?
I feel such a sense of validation because I never thought that people could be so patient and so loving and so respectful of the fact that when people make music they need to live a life to bring that music to them. It’s like, in this day in age they want to love you and destroy you. But that’s not happened. People genuinely love me and have been genuinely pulling for me to just get to it when I was ready. I want to thank anyone out there who did that for me.

So it’s safe to say that you were you blown away by the response you’ve gotten?
You’ve got to remember, I’m from Brooklyn. I grew up on welfare. My mother was a nurse. It’s like grass roots, immigrant type shit — excuse my French. But to be in a situation where you get to do what you love, take a break, come back, and still have people there, it’s given me so much confidence. I’m a very insecure person. I know I may come off a little bit like I know my shit don’t stink, but at the end of the day, I just want people to like me and I hope they like what I do. This made my world. This whole tour. especially New York tonight has been a monumental moment for me.

So speaking of the new album, when are we going to see it?
The new album is going to be out first quarter next year. We’re starting a secondary market tour and then we are doing an arena tour so I will be on the road for about two years. Going to Africa again, going to Asia, going to everywhere I haven’t been.
