Also on Friday, Maxwell was in attendance at the 41st NAACP Image Awards. Anthony Anderson and Toni Braxton were the presenters for the ‘Outstanding Male Artist’ category.

Anthony’s reaction when he opened the envelope and said Maxwell’s name was priceless and did not hide the fact of who he was pulling for.

As Maxwell made his way to the stage to graciously accept his award, he received a standing ovation from the crowd and as he delivered his acceptance speech, the camera caught cutaway shots of several females in the audience who could not hide what many viewers at home were probably doing, as well.

MAXWELL TO PERFORM AT THE 2009 ESSENCE FESTIVAL

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

During the weekend of July 3-5, 2009, Maxwell will be one of the performers during the 2009 Essence Music Festival.naturally, this is a welcome surprise to his many fans to still await the release of ‘Black Summers’ Night’, his highly anticipated trilogy. Max promises to whet the appetite of all in attendance. Read below…

Maxwell has always done things his own way, so when it came time to introduce people to the music from his forthcoming album trilogy ‘Black Summers’ Night,’ he knew exactly how he’d do it: he’d perform it for them live. Says Maxwell, “I’ve been working on and off on the ‘Black Summers’ Night’ trilogy and thought the best way to debut it was to take it direct to the people. Nothing beats a live show. You can’t mp3 it. You can record it on a camera phone, but it’ll never duplicate the raw experience of being there. In this day and age, we need that, and I need that.”

But he adds that the show won’t consist of entirely new material: “A few new songs from ‘Black Summer’s Night’ will be included in the concerts, but rest assured that as much as I want to, I won’t bombard people with material they don’t know.” There will, however, be a few unexpected numbers, including a cover of Al Green’s “Simply Beautiful” (which earned Maxwell raves when he performed it at the BET Awards earlier this year) and “an extra one that represents my love for Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z. It’s not what you think though- I’m not a rapper, and I won’t rap, but when you hear it,” explains Maxwell, “it’ll make sense!”

A Quick Chit-Chat with Maxwell

By Zandile Blay

11-26-08maxwell.jpgLast Sunday was a good night to be Maxwell. After a sold out concert at the United Palace Theater, he headed downtown to the Bowery Hotel where a room-full of lucky fans and celebrity friends like model Liya Kebede and the gal-about-town Bevy Smith waited to welcome him. Between hugs, kisses, and more hugs, he took five minutes to chat with me about his return to music, his insecurities and his roots as a Brooklyn boy.

So how are you feeling right now?
I feel such a sense of validation because I never thought that people could be so patient and so loving and so respectful of the fact that when people make music they need to live a life to bring that music to them. It’s like, in this day in age they want to love you and destroy you. But that’s not happened. People genuinely love me and have been genuinely pulling for me to just get to it when I was ready. I want to thank anyone out there who did that for me.

So it’s safe to say that you were you blown away by the response you’ve gotten?
You’ve got to remember, I’m from Brooklyn. I grew up on welfare. My mother was a nurse. It’s like grass roots, immigrant type shit — excuse my French. But to be in a situation where you get to do what you love, take a break, come back, and still have people there, it’s given me so much confidence. I’m a very insecure person. I know I may come off a little bit like I know my shit don’t stink, but at the end of the day, I just want people to like me and I hope they like what I do. This made my world. This whole tour. especially New York tonight has been a monumental moment for me.

So speaking of the new album, when are we going to see it?
The new album is going to be out first quarter next year. We’re starting a secondary market tour and then we are doing an arena tour so I will be on the road for about two years. Going to Africa again, going to Asia, going to everywhere I haven’t been.
